Course description:
This workshop is intended for neurosurgeons or ENTs from the world over, to learn and practice the technical skills required for skull base surgery. It has been structured to provide both didactic lectures and intensive hands-on cadaver dissection sessions, covering a broad spectrum of transcranial and endoscopic approaches. A panel of distinguished leaders in these fields will deliver lectures focusing on skull base anatomy, transcranial and endoscopic approaches as well as therapeutic strategies for skull base lesions. The scientific program will include a guest speaker session on a topic related to skull base neurosurgery, with lectures given by world-renowned experts. Topics previously discussed included acoustic neuroma, microvascular decompression, radiosurgery for skull base lesions, pediatric skull base neurosurgery and revascularization techniques. Attendees will benefit from the outstanding surgical lab environment of the IRCAD with state-of-the-art equipment provided by our dedicated sponsors. For hands-on sessions, a demonstration will be performed at the master station, transmitted onto a screen at each workstation. In the meantime, participants will work as a team of two on prepared injected fixed specimens under the guidance of a distinguished expert Faculty.
Target audience:
Practicing neurosurgeons and ENT specialists, fellows and residents in training
Course objectives:
– To provide an overview of the complex anatomy of the skull base
– To cover a broad spectrum of the skull base approaches and describe the technical steps of each specific approach

Preference will be given to these applicants, but others are very welcome to apply for any places which remain available. The first course took place in June 2012 and it was very successful. Since then two courses per year have been organised, normally one in January and one in June.
The next course will take place:
26 – 30 June 2017
This course is now full. To be put on the waiting list or to pre-register for the January 2018 course, please contact liz.derow@eans.org.

The capacity of the course is 20 participants, which allows a ratio of two participants per cadaver. The programme comprises both cranial and spinal approaches and endoscopy techniques of neurosurgery.
There are approximately 10 faculty members, roughly half of whom are regular EANS faculty. The rest are expert local teachers, with considerable experience of teaching on similar cadaver courses.
We believe that Lyon is an excellent venue for our Hands-On course. The University Hospital has considerable experience and expertise in this field, and the city is easily accessible by both air and rail.
The course takes place at:
Département Universitaire d’Anatomie
Faculté de Médecine Lyon Est

Testimonials:
“This hands on course is amazing; very informative and practical; every resident should attend at least one in their training period.” (January 2016)
“Well organised, friendly environment, good run through the basics and more than that. Overall good quality course like you’d expect from an EANS event.”
“Very cost efficient comparing it to other courses that I have attended in the past. The cadaver lab was equipped remarkably well, I never expected to have so many surgical instruments for a cadaver course: tools/ microscopes/ drills! All in abundance! The specimens were the BEST I’ve seen so far! Thanks to the guys in the lab! Gave me the feeling sometimes that It was close to operating on a live human being. Overall, it was by far the best hands on course that I’ve been so far! keep up the good work!”
“The course was fantastic, and was of high standard. If you can maintain this standard with such a relatively low cost, and remarkable cost – benefit ratio, your course will always be one of the best among hands on courses. I fully agree with your policy: preferring cheaper accomodation to more expensive course content.”
“Great organizers and lecturers, amazing lab structure, nice hotel and the best experience exchange with fellow residents you can get. Just do it.” (January 2016)

We are delighted to announce details of our third annual Neurovascular Section annual meeting. This year’s meeting will take place in Nice, France, on
8-10 September 2017. Previous years’ meetings were very successful, focusing on promoting and consolidating a truly interdisciplinary platform for neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, neuroradiologists, neurologists, and others who are interested in the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases.
We have worked with the European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT), to deliberately coincide the meeting with the ESMINT congress, allowing EANS attendees to have the opportunity of being present at both events. The joint day will feature keynote speakers and panel discussions.
Scientific presentations will be determined based on the open call for abstracts.
Topics for abstracts can include (but are not limited to):
Vascular malformations
Vascular rare diseases
Experimental vascular neurosurgery
Treatment and prevention of ischemia
Aneurysms
Management of Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

Next October (Friday, 13th and Saturday, 14th) will take place an advanced 3D fiber dissection course in Santander.
The participants will learn the technique of fiber dissection in order to acquire the mental imagery of the main white matter tracts.
We wanted to give a practical perspective to the course; therefore, in the second day of the course, the participants will directly apply the knowledge acquired to practice surgical approaches in the laboratory. We will simulate in the specimens an insular and ventricular approach.
